Ancient Egypt

Now that we have finished our study on Ancient Egypt, it is your turn to learn more about an area that interested you. You have 8 project options;
~~ Daily life in Ancient Egypt
~~ The River Nile
~~ The Pyramids
~~ Tutankhamun
~~ Pharaohs
~~ Gods and Beliefs
~~ Mummification and Famous Mummies
~~ A general project on Ancient Egypt

OR if there is anything that you would like to look into that is not on the list, ask Ms. Keating!

Use the information you have learned to help you with your project. You can look at the books at the research station in school or check out the links below to find out more about your chosen topic!

Remember to make your project clear and presentable so that you can show the class. Good luck :)

Extreme Weather

Room 12 have been studying weather, predicting temperatures around the world, reading the clouds, exploring various climate regions and now we are looking at extreme weather conditions. In 2010, Ireland had an extreme winter with lots of snow and freezing conditions. Ireland is quite lucky that we don't experience some of the more extreme weather conditions that other countries around the world do such as tornados, blizzards, bush fires and earthquakes.

We learned that on Monday the 26th of January, the East Coast of America was preparing for a blizzard which they named Juno! The Mayor of New York closed down the sub way and Broadway and told people to stay at home. People prepared for the blizzard by stocking up on food. Lots of governors banned people from driving and in most places, kids got days off school!

Rhode Island was also affected by the snow. Before we made our blizzard survival guides, we got to Skype Ms. Keating's uncle Kieran who lives in Rhode Island in America. We called him at 12.30pm which was 7.30am in America! He told us all about the snow and the weather over there! Kieran gave us some really good tips to help us fill out our survival guides. Kieran brought us outside so that we could see the snow and even showed us his snow blower which he uses to clear his driveway! We learned so much from our Skype call about the snow and the weather and we had loads of questions prepared to ask Kieran. We found out that the Superbowl can still go ahead because it's taking place in Arizona which is on the west coast of America. He also told us to all root for the New England Patriots (his local team) in the Superbowl on Sunday! Check out some of the pictures below!

Kieran on the interactive white board during the call!

Kieran outside in the Rhode Island snow.

The street covered in snow.

The decking covered in a lot of snow!

The snow is nearly as tall as the mail box!

A view of the entire street.

Kieran using his snow blower to clear the driveway! This takes up to 3 hours!

Extreme Weather Projects

It's project time again Room 12 and this time it's all about extreme weather conditions! Make sure to sign up for the extreme weather type that you want in class on the sign-in sheet. Below you will find some links to good websites which will help you gather the information to learn more about your topic. Don't forget you can also spend some time at the research station in class looking at the books on weather and you can ask Ms. Keating if you're unsure about anything! Everything you need is below! Have fun :)

Project Work: Extreme Weather
Have a look at W.I.L.F (What I’m Looking For) below. Good luck!
Ø  Information such as; What is your extreme weather? How does it happen? What causes such weather?
Ø  Countries which experience this weather.
Ø  How can people prepare for this weather?
Ø  What happens when this weather occurs? What does it do to an area? How does it affect people’s lives?
Ø  Big events/natural disasters around the world to do with this weather.
Ø  A labelled picture or labelled drawing of this type of weather.

How Clouds Work

In Room 12, we have been learning about the weather and the different types of clouds. We looked at the differences between stratus, cirrus and cumulus clouds. We tried an experiment in class showing how a rainstorm happens. When the clouds become too heavy with water they release it in the form of rain. We used shaving foam as the clouds and food colouring as the rain to show what happens when the cloud gets too heavy. Have a look at the pictures below.

The Science of Sound

We have been learning lots about sound. We learned that sound comes from vibrations. Sometimes we can't see these vibrations because they move so fast so we tried a few experiments to help us understand sound and the mediums it can travel through. We split up into groups, went to different stations around the room an filled out a report as we moved around! We also got to see the vibrations made by music by using Ms. Keating's speakers! Check out the video below.
Waiting to see the vibrations from the music....

Our Science Day Out

Take a look at our video of our day out at Loreto College to celebrate Science Week 2014.
We all worked hard in the lab and everyone did an experiment where we separated salt from rocksalt!

We are doing lots of science investigations for science week 2014! Here are some links to help you with those investigations! There are books on our research table too! Remember....science is everywhere!

Or search your question in BING or GOOGLE. There is loads of information out there!

GAA Projects

gaa heroes.png

We are all currently making and researching our G.A.A. projects. Each student has to complete a project on a G.A.A. player either past or present. The player can be male or female and can play either Gaelic Football, Camogie or Hurling.

W.I.L.F.
Using your project paper, include some of the following information about the player.

Name, age, hair colour, eye colour
Club
County
Position
Achievements, awards, medals, trophies
Job
Interests
Why do you admire this player?
What type of training do you think they do?

Some helpful websites;
Google the player's name and look at their Wikipedia
Look at county websites and you can find most player profiles.

Closing date is Thursday 23rd of October! Remember if you need help ask Ms. Keating and prepare questions to ask her in class. Good luck everyone...
